Medical Innovations Via Modern Machine Tool Technology

Author: Samuel Martin

Injected molded plastic parts, such as artificial knee and hip joints, specially engineered small- to medium-sized medical parts, and plastic injected syringes, pill containers and breathing apparatus devices are all essential to modern medicine and personal health care. Implant devices such as artificial hip joints are frequently made from strong, tough but hard to machine titanium and cobalt chrome stainless steel.

Much of this technological improvement simply would not have been possible without the machine tool advancements that have occurred to help generate these medical applications. And many of those industries and jobs are located in the heartland of America, according to applications engineers at Makino, a global provider of advanced machine tool technology.

This is an area of future manufacturing growth. One major designer and developer of cardiovascular medical products, such as leads that connect to life-saving devices such as implantable defibrillators and pacemakers, says the intricacy of modern machine tools makes all its work possible. The small, detailed shapes with exceptional finishes demanded by modern health industry consumers simply could not be made without the work performed by modern CNC machine tools.

Health care and orthopedic health professionals recognize that technologically progressive equipment and methods are vital to making continued advancements toward superior health care in the United States. Prioritizing the investment in machine tool technology will yield even greater health care benefits and options to an aging American population that continues to grow.

How To Find No Medical Exam Life Insurance

How To Find No Medical Exam Life Insurance

Author: Elizabeth Newberry

When you shop for life insurance online, it is possible to get a no medical exam life insurance policy. This applies most often to term life insurance policies, so the easiest way to find no medical exam life insurance is by searching a website with a large database of insurance companies that provide term life insurance policies. Make sure to include "no medical exam" in your query.

However, before you begin your search you should be aware that not all no medical exam life insurance policies actually apply to all people. Once you find a database to search for life insurance quotes, you'll have to complete a questionnaire of sorts. You'll be asked personal information such as your gender, age, weight, and height. You'll also be asked about your medical history, and often times about the medical history of your family. This "application" will help the life insurance agents determine whether or not you're eligible for a no medical exam life insurance policy. Frankly put, you pretty much have to be young and in excellent health to qualify for no medical exam life insurance.

Another important factor you should be aware of is the danger of lying on your life insurance application. It's easy - and undoubtedly tempting - to fudge the truth a bit when you're completing the life insurance application online and no one's looking. However, if the life insurance company discovers the truth, your no medical exam life insurance policy will be canceled. At the same time, if you die due to a health condition not represented on your no medical life insurance application and policy (such as smoking), your beneficiaries could actually be denied death benefits.

So, if you're young, in relatively good health, and would rather purchase a life insurance policy without the hassled of undergoing a medical exam, go ahead and begin your search. Just make sure you understand the fine print and tell the truth.

How To Treat Hemorrhoids: From Home Treatment To Medical Care

How To Treat Hemorrhoids: From Home Treatment To Medical Care

Author: Scott Goodman

Definition:

Hemorrhoids are a venous dilation inside the anal sphincter of the rectum and beneath the mucous membrane (internal), or outside the anal sphincter and beneath the surface of the skin (external). The tissue of the walls of the venous system become weak and the veins may even form clots of blood. They can protrude into the anal canal or hang externally. Imagine hemorrhoids as weak veins similar to varicosity in the legs.

Hemorrhoids are an overfilled blood vessel which needs to be relieved of some of the blood. Occasionally bloody streaks on the outside of your stool may come from hemorrhoids or temporary anal irritation. Hemorrhoids can present quite a bit of bright blood in the toilet or blood adhering to the stool or bright blood on the toilet tissue.

How to Treat Hemorrhoids: From Home Treatment to Medical Care

A hemorrhoid occurs when a vein in the anal area becomes enlarged and irritated. This condition can occur outside of the anus, and is called an external hemorrhoid. Internal hemorrhoids, on the other hand, are located inside of the anus and are often the cause of much rectal bleeding though hardly ever any pain. Deciding how to treat hemorrhoids will depend on whether it is internal or external hemorrhoids, how large they are, and whether they are causing much discomfort. If someone suspects that they have a hemorrhoid, it is important to see a doctor first, since other illnesses tend to mimic the symptoms of hemorrhoids as well. Once a doctor has diagnosed the problem, research can be done on how to treat the hemorrhoids in the most effective way.

How to Treat Hemorrhoids at Home

There are a number of things that can be done at home to treat hemorrhoid symptoms and bring more pain-free days and nights. First, a dietary change may be in order to keep the digestive system running smoothly and stools soft and easy to pass. This can include increasing the amount of fiber in a diet by eating more whole grains and fruits, as well as cutting back on processed foods that can be constipating. Also increase the amount of water in take, since this will also help the digestive system to run more smoothly and prevent constipation. Keeping weight in check and getting regular exercise are also good habits, but be careful not to participate in strenuous workouts like weight lifting that could actually exacerbate the problem.

Warm baths can be taken numerous times a day, and will greatly relieve the pain and itching that many hemorrhoid sufferers experience and will increase blood flow to the area. Try filling q tub with a few inches of clean, warm water, and sitting for up to ten minutes at a time. Using medicated wipes like Tucks or applying witch hazel to the area is another good method in how to treat hemorrhoid symptoms. Buying over-the-counter ointments or creams can offer a tremendous amount of relief from pain and itching. Simply apply after using the bathroom as many times a day as necessary to see relief.

How to Treat Hemorrhoids with your Doctor

If home remedies do not bring the desired relief, talk to a doctor about medical treatment options as well. These might include fixative procedures that will cause the hemorrhoid to shrink or even fall off, or surgical procedures to remove the hemorrhoid completely. When it comes to how to treat hemorrhoids most effectively, doctors will be the best source of information and advice.

Health Care Proxy Legally Entitles An Authorized Agent To Take Medical Decisions On Your Behalf

Health Care Proxy Legally Entitles An Authorized Agent To Take Medical Decisions On Your Behalf

Author: Roland Jefferson III

The health care proxy is a legal means of choosing an authorized person who is able to make medical decisions on your behalf when circumstances are such that you are yourself unable to make such decisions. The health care proxy is an important legal document, which should be well understood prior to signing it since it will give to another person the authority to make each and every decision relating to your health including deciding to remove, or give treatment meant to sustain your life.

Give Instructions Related To Artificial Nutrition, And More

It is also important for you to state in your health care proxy what you wish for regarding artificial nutrition as well as hydration treatment, which is water given through feeding tubes or intravenous lines, and to allow for such measures to be performed according to your wishes. The authorized agent will be able to make such decisions when the doctor determines that you are not in a suitable condition to take such health related decisions on your own.

You can also write your health care proxy instructions regarding which type of treatments you do not desire as well as those treatments you wish for, and the instructions can also limit the decisions that your agent can, or cannot make. Your agent must follow these instructions to the T when in the process of making decisions on your behalf. There is however no need to have a lawyer to fill out the health care proxy form.

Also, for the authorized agent, you can choose anyone who is an adult and over eighteen years of age, and it can even be a family member as well as a close friend. You may also wish to appoint a doctor as the authorized agent who may then have to choose between acting as your agent, or as the attendant doctor.

Before you appoint someone as your authorized agent in the health care proxy, you should have discussions with such person and ensure that he or she is willing to act on your behalf, and let such person know that he or she will be acting as your authorized agent as per the health care proxy. Sometimes, you may appoint your spouse whom you may at a later time divorce. In such a case, your former spouse will no longer be able to act as your agent, unless you specifically allow for such circumstances.

Signing the health care proxy does still allow you to make your own health care decisions for as long as you are in a condition to do so, and you can continue to receive treatment and your agent will not have a power to object if you raise an objection at some point during your health care treatment. The agent will be voluntarily appointed, and you can also specify how to treat the organs as well as donate them along with tissues.

The Medical Reasons Behind Low Libido

The Medical Reasons Behind Low Libido

Author: SamRobbins

Did you know that low libido and a decrease in your sex drive, is a major warning sign of serious health problems, cancer and early death? Accelerated aging is the main reasons why and how your sex drive, muscle & strength dropped prematurely. Sure, you can say it's probably because I'm just getting older, but then of course - you have friends who seem to be going strong and have no libido problems and yet, they're the same age as you!

You might even blame your sex drive problems on stress or being bored with your partner. But come on, you can't use that excuse every time. Basically, what's happening is that your body is aging at an accelerated pace.

So, science has discovered that if you can optimize your hormones naturally, you will reduce and even reverse the aging process! With that said, let's start with the king of all hormones. Testosterone is the one hormone that really does control most of the positive physical and mental aspects of your body - especially when it comes to your sex drive and muscle mass. This is true not only in men, but in women as well! Science has shown that by age 27, we are producing up to 35% less testosterone than our early 20's and by the time you're 50 years old, testosterone levels are 75% less than what they use to be.

A lot of everyday things can suppress and lower your testosterone levels. But, there are a few short and long-term solutions that are easy to implement that will bring you quick results. There are 3 potential solutions: (1) Testosterone Replacement Therapy; (2) E.D. Drugs - Viagra, Cialis & Levitra; and (3) Natural Herbs & Supplements but only one that's both effective and safe for long-term usage by men and women.

Natural Herbs & Supplements

Your best all around option which is to do it naturally within the body through all natural herbs and amino acids. The positive effects are both immediate and long-term. You will have enhanced and optimized both physical performance and mental desires/urges. Plus, it works for both Men & Women. Because it's natural and happens within your body, you will feel only the positive effects of testosterone and none of the negative ones. Lastly and most importantly, it's inexpensive, no doctor's visits or prescriptions needed, totally legal, not addictive and it also helps to slow down and even reverse the aging process.

With that said, I wanted a long-term solution for my clients and patients. One that had all the positive effects of the natural testosterone levels of my teenage years and early 20's (great sex drive, extra muscle, more strength, less fat, lots of energy, etc.), without the negative long-term side-effects of exogenous testosterone injections (hair loss, prostate cancer, high blood pressure, expensive prescriptions and blood work, etc.).

So, back in 1999, my college Dr. Gary Lords and I created a special formula utilizing the Synergy Optimizer™ technology for both my patients and even Olympic athletes. Since then, we've improved and strengthened this formula over the past 9+ years in our best selling, all natural and extra strength formula called AlphaViril™

If you're fed-up, frustrated and just tired of always trying something new, only to have it fail ... And you're tired of feeling insecure about your sex drive or worried that things are going to get even worse as you age - then you probably want to give AlphaViril™ a try.

Parton Focuses Public Attention on Medical Necessity of Breast Reduction

Parton Focuses Public Attention on Medical Necessity of Breast Reduction

Author: Leaftech

Early in February 2008 country songbird Dolly Parton announced the postponement of her North American Tour. But it wasn't an issue of bungled bookings or troubles with the band. Parton's wears her woes on her size DD chest. That trademark bustline, surgically made even more impressive, is ruining her back and doctors have ordered her to rest. Since 2004, Parton has considered breast reduction to take the strain off her back and admits "my boobs are killing me." While breast enlargement is often seen as a matter of vanity or sexuality, breast reduction gets less ink in the popular press. This surgery is, more times than not, a matter of medical necessity and personal comfort to relieve an otherwise inescapable source of pressure on the back.

The number of problems associated with an overly large bust are multiple, beginning with chronic pain in the neck, shoulders, and back. This in turn leads to poor posture. Overall the degree of physical activity is decreased and with it, self-esteem often plummets, giving way to embarrassment and discomfort. Some women experience rashes under the breasts and deep grooves form in their shoulders from the pressure of the bra straps. Additionally, women with excessively large breasts often have trouble finding bras and comfortable, flattering clothes.

Surgeons counsel putting off breast reduction surgery until after age 20 at which time the bustline has become fully developed. If, however, large breasted teens are suffering severe psychological and emotional effects, usually due to the taunting of their peers, the procedure can be performed at any time. Women who want to have children would do well to postpone their surgery until after they've given birth as pregnancy can alter the surgical result and breast feeding after a reduction procedure may be difficult or impossible.

If a patient's primary care physician or back specialist orders the surgery as a medical necessity, health insurance may cover the procedure. For a patient to qualify for coverage, the insurance company could actually set the level to which the breasts are to be reduced, which does take away a degree of personal choice from the woman. Since the procedure can, however, range in cost from $5,000 to $10,000, many patients are willing to meet the company's requirement. Consultation with a surgeon will include photographs and measurements as well as discussions of such factors as the positioning of the aureola and nipple. There is no room for shyness and patients should prepare themselves for frank discussion and a thorough breast exam.

As for the surgery itself, typically an incision in the shape of an anchor is made around the aureola, down the breast toward the creased area between the breast and abdomen, and then horizontally across that crease. This gives the surgeon sufficient access to remove excess fat and skin. In extreme cases the nipple and aureola are removed and reattached in the proper position. (This can result in a permanent loss of sensation and can make breast feeding impossible.) The surgery lasts 2 to 3 hours and most people are able to return to work in two to three weeks.

Breast reduction surgery is a major procedure that can be both expensive and uncomfortable. The long-term goal, however, is to relieve potentially crippling pressure on the back and in the process to help the patient look and feel better. Many people have the mistaken impression that breast reductions are only done for cosmetic reasons. Parton's public admission about the necessity of postponing her tour has brought to the attention of the public the real medical problem underlying a large bustline. Admitting that she doesn't know if she can stand the back pain any longer, Parton, like thousands of other women, may sacrifice her "trademark" for better back health.

What is an Independent Medical Examination?

What is an Independent Medical Examination?

Author: Gary E Rosenberg

An Independent medical examination (IME) is an examination done by a doctor (usually hired by an insurance company) because you have a claim or lawsuit and there is a dispute of your physical or mental condition.

Personal injury lawsuit (as plaintiff);

New York No-Fault insurance claim (from a motor vehicle accident);

Worker's Compensation claim; or,

Disability insurance benefits claim.

You should know several things about the IME. The "other side" ' usually an insurance company ' selects the doctor. Usually, the doctor has a medical specialty in the area where the hurt person is claiming injury. So a claim for a fractured arm or leg should mean you see an orthopedist; an eye injury, an opthalmologist; broken teeth, a dentist; and so on. You may be asked to undergo more than one IME visit, by doctors with different specialties. After you are examined the IME doctor will write a report that will be sent to the insurance company or law firm that hired him or her. Usually a copy is then sent to your attorney.

IMEs are not really "independent." The doctor examining you is paid by the insurance company and he or she knows that a continued flow of insurance company business depends on making findings and writing reports that minimize your claim ' for the greater good and benefit of the company paying the bill. This can lead to outrages like reports indicating extra tests with negative results that were never even performed in the office or the patient complaining about aches and pains or limitations/restrictions and the IME doctor agreeing with that person but then writing a report that omits that information. The IME report may even read like it was someone else with different injuries who was examined.

Remember, an IME doctor is not trying to help the injured accident victim get better or cured. An IME doctor is hired to punch holes in a claimant's or plaintiff's case.

How to behave and what to expect at an IME examination.

Arrive a little early. You may be asked to fill out a medical history form.

Don't be hostile to the IME doctor; be cooperative. Questions about the accident will be asked by the examining doctor. Your answers should be kept short. You should bring a pad and pen and note how long the exam takes and what tests are performed on you. This information should be made available to your attorney afterwards.

You may want to bring notes with you to the IME with a list of symptoms ' what hurts you and when and your physical or mental limitations, what medical tests you have had with positive results, and what medications you're taking and why.

During the IME, tell the doctor if it hurts. If something doesn't hurt, don't lie. You may damage your case or claim because the doctor will usually know.

You do not have to submit to invasive tests such as x-rays or take any injections.

Watch for tricks. The doctor may drop something to see if you can bend down and pick it up. Also, you will be observed getting on and off the examination table. You may be subject to videotape surveillance by the insurance company ' so if you walk into the IME using a cane or crutch, make darn certain that you're using the cane or crutch when you leave.

In case you're curious. IME examinations under No-Fault or disability insurance come from your actual insurance policy which always provides that you have to cooperate with the insurance company in its investigation of your claim.

In an accident or personal injury lawsuit, the hurt plaintiff puts his or her medical condition into issue by seeking damages. The defense is entitled to have an IME to enable it to defend against the plaintiff's claim of injury. This right is set forth in New York's statutory (written) law at Civil Practice Law and Rules Section 3121(a), which states:

Notice of examination. After commencement of an action in which the mental or physical condition or the blood relationship of a party, or of an agent, employee or person in the custody or under the legal control of a party, is in controversy, any party may serve notice on another party to submit to a physical, mental or blood examination by a designated physician, or to produce for such examination his agent, employee or the person in his custody or under his legal control.

This right is also found in New York's Court Rules, 22 NYCRR 202.17(a), which states:

At any time after joinder of issue and service of a bill of particulars, the party to be examined or any other party may serve on all other parties a notice fixing the time and place of examination.

If you have specific questions, be sure to check with your attorney.

Unplanned Medical Bills - How A Personal Debt Consolidation Loan Can Help Your Finances

Author: Thomas Erikson

A personal debt consolidation loan can be a very effective way to deal with unexpected medical expenses, especially if you are juggling multiple credit cards and struggling to find the payments. By consolidating debt, you can increase your monthly disposable income to cover extra monthly medical expenses or you can increase the amount you are borrowing to cover major medical expenses while keeping your repayments much the same.

A personal debt consolidation loan will have a lower interest rate than most credit cards or consumer credit and will save you a lot of money over the term of the loan, while immediately improving your quality of life and allowing you to meet your obligations.

When shopping for the right personal debt consolidation loan to meet your needs, look for the lowest interest rate and lowest fees available to you. Read the loan contract carefully to see if the lender can increase interest rates and to identify any late payment charges or penalties. This can be a bit confusing for a lay-person. It may well be worth your while to find a professional financial counselor who specializes in debt counseling to help you find the right product. This person can also help you work out a budget to cover all your living costs and include strategies to improve your long term financial position.

Sudden medical expenses can put a lot of pressure on a family. A personal debt consolidation loan can not only alleviate the pressure, it can improve the immediate and long term financial prospects of the family. However, it is important to cancel your credit cards and any lines of credit after they are paid out, to avoid the temptation of using them again and forcing your debt levels back up. Under pressure, most of us will use the credit option and be optimistic that we can pay it off later. We need to remember that we have already tried that, and it didn't work.

Sudden, unexpected medical expenses are usually the result of misfortune in the family either through an accident or an illness. A personal debt consolidation loan can take a lot of stress off the family and the finances as it tries to deal with often difficult circumstances. By using this strategy, you can have some breathing space to focus on your family. Even bill paying is easier, with multiple accounts being replaced with one lower monthly payment.

A personal debt consolidation loan will take the financial pressure off you so that you can focus on what is most important - your family!

Why is it Vitally Important to Buy a Travel & Medical Insurance when Booking a Trip

Why is it Vitally Important to Buy a Travel & Medical Insurance when Booking a Trip

Author: Sevim Or

The high travel season is at the corner now. People from all walks of life around the world are currently busy searching for the best offers of air and land travel, accommodations, vacation packages to suit their dreams, needs and budgets. Some of them have even started to make their reservations.

Here I would like to emphasize one vitally important thing, which is a must to remember when booking a trip, but ignored by a great number of travelers.

Much has been written on the importance of having insurance coverage while you are on a trip, away from home. This is an issue that remains somewhat ignored by many travelers. After all, they have been traveling frequently for many years, and nothing happened so far to worry about. So, to buy a travel insurance should not a be a must. It is only an optional precaution!

But, reality urges us to believe traveling anywhere in the world without protection today, is a vital mistake. Regardless of where you are traveling in the world, you must have an insurance coverage to survive any unexpected attacks and disasters, especially after the 9/11 attacks in the U.S.A.

Let's say, you have been planning the trip of your dreams for a long time; you have finally found the opportunity to make your long time dreams of a special trip come true.

You are so excited! You have thought of all the details. You have been actively preparing for this travel; thinking, programming, shopping . . . spending a lot of time, money, and energy! You are proud of yourself that you have finally managed to materialize your dream!

Your trip can really be an unforgettable experience from start to the end, on one condition.

When booking your trip, you should have remembered that, like most exciting events in our lives, travel has some important risks, too. For example, potential medical and/or financial risks associated with travel, can suddenly turn all the excitement and pleasures of the trip to a nightmare.

Your baggage and/or your hand bag with your money, passport, credit cards in, can be stolen leaving you desperate & frustrated in a foreign country.

No one can guarantee that a natural disaster would not happen at the place you would be staying during your trip.

An unexpected accident, injury or illness would suddenly ruin everything. In fact, in the recent years medical costs have increased dramatically, worldwide. How would you be able to pay the emergency medical expenses, expensive hospital bills if you needed an urgent treatment, or surgery and care during your travel when you have lost your money, credit cards, and passport? Isn't it a real nightmare?

In such a frustration, the only thing you would have needed to survive was a reliable medical and travel insurance policy, wasn't it?.

Especially in the light of the horrible threats on and after September 11 terrorist attacks, the war on terror, other ruthless terror attacks in Istanbul, Spain, Egypt and London, frequent flight disruptions and cancellations, airlines' bankruptcies, and more. In addition, travel suppliers such as tour operators and airlines worldwide have made cancellation policies more restrictive.

Therefore, if you have to cancel a trip, it's likely that a big portion of your pre-paid travel expenses will not be refunded by travel suppliers.

Recent SARS and bird flu threats have also been urging travelers and vacationers to seriously consider to buy a travel and medical insurance.

Travel Insurance types and prices defer from one travel insurance provider to another.

You have to review, compare and select the best offers to suit your personal needs.

For instance, some insurance providers do not offer coverage outside the U.S.A. Some companies do not provide emergency medical coverage and care, while others do.

Some airlines do not accept to be held responsible for the acts of God, weather problems, natural disasters, riots and unrests, SARS, bird flu, and similar outbreaks.

The Insurance types you will need on a trip are reviewed below:

Last Minute Cancellation Insurance

With the last minute cancellation and/or interruption insurance you will get coverage on non-refundable deposits you had made when you bought your travel insurance. Read the fine print on the policy carefully when buying this insurance. You should discuss your personal needs with your insurance agent before buying it.

Medical Insurance

This is one of the most important insurance policies you should have. Buying health and medical insurance must be considered as an important part of your travel budget. You can face a health problem or an accident anywhere and anytime during your trip. Be sure your medical and health insurance policy covers illness, accidents, surgeries, hospitalization bills in the countries you will be visiting, emergency medical transportation to your home country. Please remember to have your policies with you when traveling, leaving the copies of your insurance policies with a relative in your home country, in case the policies you have with you are lost.

Comprehensive Insurance Policy

This policy generally covers emergency medical transportation and trip cancellation and interruption, plus other needs you would expect. This insurance costs 5 to 7 percent of the total cost of the trip. You should have it for your safety.

What types of insurance policies do we need for a full protection?

The Essential Insurance Types offered by most providers are Travel, Last Minute, Medical, Health, Life, Hotel, Cruise, Air, Vacations, Luxury, car insurance, sports, and Spa Insurance policies.

Some travel insurance companies also offer affordable coverage for a wide range of winter sports including Ski, Off-Piste and Snowboarding.

We might need not one, but several types of insurance policies according to the general conditions at the destinations we're going to.

If your your kids are going with you, many travel insurance providers let them go free with adults.

Some companies provide policies for students, backpackers, cheap travel, holiday insurance, long stay, international, family travel, single travel, annual travel, annual multi-trips, and more. It's good to know that in this cyber age, you can buy the insurance policies you need online, without even leaving your home.

Most Travel Insurance policies cover Luggage Loss, too.

But you should definitely ask about what's covered and what's not when choosing Travel Insurance Policy to buy. Do ask questions, all questions you might have in mind, until you get all the information you need. It's much better to ask questions when buying insurance than to be sorry later.

How can I find the best insurance type to suit my personal or family needs?

When choosing a travel insurance policy to buy, you should get information on the offers of various insurance providers to compare.

Knowing how time consuming is to search, compare and choose the best travel and medical insurance types and prices to suit your needs and budget, we advice to visit the websites where you can find lists and information about various offers, then compare them, and choose the best ones to suit your needs.

You should keep in mind that buying your travel insurance through travel insurance providers, instead of travel agencies, would save you money in most cases.

In the light of terrorist attacks, unexpected natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, deadly hurricanes, floods, epidemics, accidents, illness, SARS, bird flu, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives at many places around the world, especially in the recent years, every traveler must seriously consider to buy a travel health and a medical insurance, and some other insurance policies if needed, providing a reliable full coverage against both expected and unexpected threats.

Should you be suddenly taken ill or have an accident in any of these countries, then the EHIC will entitle you, in most cases, to free, or at a reduced cost, necessary medical treatment.

Do remember, however, that an EHIC does not cover you for all the medical costs that you can incur or for your repatriation – it is not an alternative to medical insurance and to go abroad without appropriate medical cover, as provided by most travel insurance policies, is probably as close to playing ‘Russian Roulette’ as you can get. Further more, an EHIC does not cover you outside the areas described and although the UK has mutual agreements with many countries, these arrangements don’t cover all expenses you can incur. You may have to pay thousands of pounds in medical costs, a prime example is the USA and Canada where medical treatment is expensive and, increasingly, there are many other countries that fall into this category.

So we do recommend that before you travel that you always arrange travel insurance with health cover that is adequate for your destination. The FCO advises that the level of cover should be at least 1million for Europe or 2million for the rest of the world but most travel insurance policies now offer cover beyond these figures and 5million is becoming quite standard and even higher figures are common. As with all insurances where health cover is required, there may be restrictions because of a particular medical condition for example, which may result in a higher premium to be paid. At the end of the day though, what you are paying for is ‘peace of mind’ and that is why it is so important to make sure you get cover before you go..

For extensive travel insurance , why not visit Travel and Insure - a travel insurance business with a difference!

Obesity And Smoking Are The Leading Causes Of Chronic Medical Conditions

Author: Karin Manning

Being overweight and being a smoker are the two leading causes of chronic medical conditions in both men and women. In fact, if a person is obese and a smoker their chances of acquiring serious life threatening medical conditions is very high.

The history of smoking dates back from centuries ago, but you can never hear anything that talks of smoking as beneficial to health. Nobody can teach a dog an old trick, so you can never instruct a heavy smoker to quit from smoking. Smoking is like a habit that is embedded in your system like the more you smoke the better you feel.

Cigarettes and tobacco have nicotine that causes the addiction. Smokers believe that every puff can ease out the tension and steers they feel. Smoking makes them think clearly, notwithstanding the adverse effects it causes to their health. It can cause diseases like emphysema, cancer and other cardiovascular diseases.

Smoking is considered an in thing especially among youngsters. Because of peer pressure teenagers are forced to like or are enticed to smoke just to belong to a group. In some instances, smoking has become the yardstick of group affiliation among the young. More and more teenagers are now addicted to smoking which increases their susceptibility to health related risks of smoking.

Obesity is looked upon differently. Obesity compared with smoking, obese people cannot join a group whose members have normal body weight. Unless of course they create their own group that is exclusive for obese and overweight.

Obesity compared with smoking have both become an issue among youth. Although the two are viewed differently, they continue to impact the health of young individuals. Obesity has been linked to diseases like stroke, hypertension and even cancer. It is also the leading cause of type-2 diabetes.

While obesity is something to curb, smoking is seen as a fad. Nevertheless, it is the health of the youth that is at stake. It is interesting to note, however that the population of both obese and smokers are getting younger. Obesity and smoking will continue to pose a challenge to both developing and developed countries. Obesity compared with smoking is as bad to one's health as smoking.

So if you are fat and you smoke, which group do you belong then? The question is rather rhetoric. The answer lies on which of the two are you willing to get rid off. But any which one left is still detrimental to one's health.

It is best to tackle one of these problems rather than both at once. Invariably smokers who give up tend to put on weight so perhaps the best way to start is to try to do something about your weight.

Conventional Medical Treatment for Celiac Disease

Conventional Medical Treatment for Celiac Disease

Author: Alien

Description

Celiac disease is a type of malabsorption syndrome. During digestion, food is broken down into nutrient molecules that can be absorbed by the bloodstream. In people with malabsorption syndrome, nutrients are not released into the bloodstream but are instead eliminated in the stool. As a result, the body does not get the nutrients it needs from food.

Also called celiac sprue, celiac disease is a relatively uncommon ailment, affecting approximately 1 person in 1000. It is caused by a sensitivity to gluten, a substance found in wheat, rye, oats, and barley. With extended exposure to gluten, the intestinal lining loses the tiny folds through which nutrients are absorbed and stops producing adequate amounts of digestive enzymes.

While the precise cause of gluten sensitivity is unknown, celiac disease is believed to be hereditary. The disease is diagnosed most often in children, though it can appear in adults with no prior sensitivity to gluten.

Signs and Symptoms

Abdominal pain or cramps

Bloating

Diarrhea

Foul-smelling, grayish stools that may float and may be larger than normal

Gas

General weakness and fatigue

Weight loss

In children, failure to grow or muscle weakness

Conventional Medical Treatment

To diagnose celiac disease, your physician may take a stool sample and a barium X-ray of your small intestine. You may also have to have a biopsy (tissue sample) taken from the lining of your small intestine. Celiac disease is usually treated with a strict gluten-free diet. When carefully followed, a gluten-free diet allows the villi of the small intestines to resume their normal shape and absorption ability. Within two to four months, you should resume normal digestion and will begin to regain weight.

Complementary and Alternative Treatments

Nutrition and Supplementation

The number one enemy of celiac is gluten in any form. Avoid all products containing barley, rye, wheat, oats, hydrolyzed vegetable or plant protein, textured vegetable protein, malt, modified food starch, binders, fillers, and "natural flavorings." Do not eat hot dogs, gravies, luncheon meat, beer, mustard, catsup, non-dairy creamer, white vinegar, curry powder, or seasonings. Be sure your nutritional supplements do not contain gluten. Gluten-free products are available at health food stores, call 800-633-3826 and ask for a gluten-free product catalog.

Because lactose intolerance often occurs with liac disease, eliminate milk and dairy products from your diet. For optimum health, breastfeed your child for a longer period of time and postpone introducing cow's milk and grains into the diet until the child is older. Do not eat sugary products, processed foods, bouillon cubes, chocolate, or bottled salad dressings.

Although it may sound as though there aren't any foods left to eat, you can and should eat foods rich in folic acid, such as green leafy vegetables, lentils, seeds, nuts, and beans. Be sure to include raisins, strawberries, raspberries, fresh vegetables, sunflower seeds, and rice bran. Pay close attention to your intake of iron and B vitamins; people with celiac disease are often deficient in these nutrients.

Because celiac disease affects the intestine, your body is unable to absorb many vital nutrients. Make sure your healthcare professional checks your digestion and nutrient absorption. Supplementation is necessary, and the daily guidelines that follow should help manage your symptoms. (Note: To avoid any digestive problems you should gradually build up to these amounts. Always do so under the supervision of your healthcare professional.)

Viaticals- a ‘dark Alternative’ to Shielding Survivors From Credit Challenges of Medical Collections & Judgments

Viaticals- a ‘dark Alternative’ to Shielding Survivors From Credit Challenges of Medical Collections & Judgments

Author: Dale Rogers

With accelerating medical costs the tab can be run up fairly quickly. Any savings or even health insurance may not be even close enough to meet the burden. Home equities can be quickly squeezed and exhausted. The terminal patient (this could be someone severely over weight-family history of heart disease as well-etc.) never intended to leave loved ones holding the ultimate financial bag. It just happens. As thoughts of Ralph Edwards the former host of “This Is Your Life” play out in the brain the mind may race ahead to the final act leaving loved ones to deal with the financial aftermath of this “life”. The obituary might read “He was a great guy/gal, but left his family and loved ones with a ton of unpaid debts.” An alternative for a terminally ill patient (or could be medically challenged and not able to work) may be a “Viatical”. If there is a term life insurance policy or better, such as whole life, universal life, annuity etc., in place or even a paid up policy or one that has monthly payments being made this could quality for the Viatical vehicle.

This then is the ultimate and final use of a handicapper. When life policies are taken out actuaries make a bet when a person is going to die based on their medical history, age, weight, health levels, occupations, smoker, non-smoker, etc. Later on, if the need arises, another handicapper can enter the scene. It is by request only. Viaticals are based on handicapping the rest of a person’s life based on the medical and such to determine by guessing when death might arrive. An investor will bid on a discounted basis on the face amount of the policy to give the insured and beneficiaries cash right now. A terminally ill patient may want to get their financial affairs cleaned up before dying so as not to stick love ones with a financial disaster. This comes home to anyone who in addition is dealing with the terminal illness but may be facing foreclosure from their home, cars repossessed, credit that has long since gone down the drain and a whole new layer of stress in the circle of concerned and effected loved ones. What to do, ride it out and let the chips fall where they may, OR make an effort to get it handled now and bring some peace to everyone by taking care of the financial affairs before death. Yes there will be a substantial reduction in the face value of the policy by taking a cash advance now, but it may save a lot of pain for immediate survivors. This is not for everyone. Obviously, if there is no life insurance policy in place for the terminally ill patient, this will not be an option.

When Groucho Marx was host of the “You Bet Your Life” game show, it was a very funny game show. This, however, becomes the ultimate “bet” for an insured life and certainly it’s not too funny, but it represents one alternative. On the one hand the beneficiaries of the policy want the absolute most possible cash versus the face value of the policy, whereas the investor doesn’t want to pay too much if the terminally ill patient makes a miraculous recovery and the return to the investor is delayed by years. So the arm wrestling is engaged and negotiations are mounted. Medical histories and doctor input (with the patients written permission) together with the life policy product are all utilized to come up with a number. Decisions have to be made. Is the cash enough or should the premiums be maintained (if required) and let nature take its course. It’s a delicate balance between patient needs and cleaning up ones financial affairs before death. This ‘Dark Alternative’ has received massive negative press. Investigations were initiated against some of the handicapper players for taking advantage of the life policy insured, which were perceived to be the most vulnerable. However, would it be better for the family to be set out on the curb when the sheriff issues the final eviction on the foreclosure? Would it be better for the family cars to be repossessed for non-payment? Would it be good for survivors to have wages attached through garnishment? Talk about life interrupted, this is a major stress magnet for all parties involved not the least of which is the insured. So who is to question, if someone is willing to pay cash now for a future benefit. Even multi-billionaire Mr. Warren Buffet was a player in Viaticals for a time. It’s not like there is only one place to go. An insured can select the highest bidder from a whole host of interested parties. Search any online engine and there they are.

After receiving the cash for the life policy the Viatical owner/investor will make any needed payments on the policy to protect their vested position. The insured is relieved of making any additional payments for the rest of their life or when the term of the policy expires such as a stated term policy with conversion priveleges. Here is an example how this might work. These are online publicly published numbers, we can only assume they are true. Source: CIGI Direct (Not an endorsement). The discounts are deep but immediate cash is generated. Each case will totally be different. This is just cursory examples.

Female: 77 (Very Good Health) Male: 68 (Bypass History)

Policy Type: Universal Life Policy Type: Convertible Term Life

Face Amount: $750,000 Face Amount: $200,000

Cash Value: $102,287 Cash Value: $0

Life Settlement to Customer: $137,000. Life Settlement to Customer: $40,500.

Male: 56 (Prostate Cancer History) Male: 66 (Very Good Health)

Policy Type: Convertible Term Life Policy Type: Convertible Term Life

Face Amount: $1,500,000 Face Amount: $1,000,000

Cash Value: $ 0 Cash Value: $0

Life Settlement to Customer: $360,000 Life Settlement to Customer: $24,650

These are just a few examples only. Again, each individual case is different. Each investor in a Viatical will handicap (underwrite) it differently. Consumers need to be aware and shop for the best offer. A focused effort of nailing a good cash settlement through using a Viatical settlement won’t make a day or two difference so a consumer needs to get as many quotes as possible. Once one accumulates the revenant data, it can then be presented to multiple buyer participants who may have an interest. Then with a price settled, papers are signed and a cash transfer is made. Obviously, establishing the correct identification of the insured and determining a valid enforceable insurance contract will need to be verified and proved. There is always the possibility that someone in one’s family or circle of friends may beat the bid and take a position in excess of the highest bid. You never know. It would be worth while to at least inquire. This is no time for family secrets here with the grim reaper lurking about. If a family member can help out in this situation that would be great. They might as well as benefit as opposed to a stranger corporate investor. In this case there could be some mitigation and resolution after death IF the family member would choose to share. Dealing with a company or investor, there would be ZERO chance of that.

In conclusion, this is just another tool to help in credit situations where there are little choices and alternatives. It would be great to be flush with cash, full insurance, huge investment portfolios and such, but some just don’t have it. If there is life insurance place in place and there no other valid alternatives, Viaticals can be an option to consider while Bankruptcy and other options will not work. The ‘Dark Alternative’ can lead to comfort for all parties in the death process, which is all part of life. It may ensure a sense of “Death With Dignity’.

More Than 5000 Year-old Medical Secret Unearthed!

More Than 5000 Year-old Medical Secret Unearthed!

Author: Nicholas Tan

When you get sick, you go to the doctor. And the doctor will, of course, prescribe medicines. You will go and buy medicines. You take them, and hopefully, you get well.

This is how the health profession goes on nowadays – a cycle of diagnosis and prescription.

If anyone were to give you herbs for medicine, you would probably say that that person was a quack.

But nowadays, studies are being conducted to see if there are really is any merit to what is called natural medicine.

Natural medicine is the use of natural methods, herbal medicines, and traditional practices to heal ailments. Every culture has a form of natural medicine. In ancient cultures, village medicine men served as the doctors of the community, passing on medical knowledge to the apprentices that followed them.

Many categories of the healing methods fall under natural medicine. Among these are traditional medicine, complementary medicine, and alternative medicine.

Usually, natural medicine refers to medical practices that were in place before the advent of modern medicine.

This includes herbal medicine, or phytotherapy, which is prevalent in Chinese, Ayurvedic(or Indian), and Greek medicine.

Upon the advent of modern medicine, many professionals discarded the use of herbs in favor of man-made medicine. The fact that these treatments are based on the healing properties of some herbs was forgotten.

For example, opium, digitalis, quinine, and aspirin all have their roots in traditional medicine.

Natural medicine can be considered as a lost art. This does not mean that it has lost efficacy over time. In some cases, natural therapy is actually better than modern medicine. This leads some doctors to seriously consider and study the possible uses of natural medicine

Before we continue, it is important to stress that not all the natural remedies are legitimate. It would help to only try those remedies which have been thoroughly studied and are relatively risk free.

Take herbal medicine for example. There are many well-documented and studied herbal remedies available. However, only those that deal with minor ailments such as cough, colds, fever, skin rashes, and its ilk are likely to be recommended by health professionals. These remedies are sometimes superior to synthetic medicine. This is because herbal medicines are less likely to cause negative side effects.

Currently there are numerous organizations that study the effects and advocacy of natural medicine – among which is herbal medicine. Some governments and health agencies openly advocate the use of natural methods since they are inexpensive and relatively risk-free.

As their studies compile, more herbs and treatments are added to the list of accepted medicines. However, many herbs and treatments have been proven to be bogus medicine. This represents a challenge for both the user and the agencies because they have to ascertain that the treatments they either use or advocate are legitimate.

There exist today many alternative medical treatments that fall under natural medicine. However, not all of them have been proven to be effective. You could mention homeopathy, aromatherapy, acupuncture, and other alternative medical treatments. It would pay to consult the experts as to the legitimacy of these treatments.

Natural medicine should also be thought of as an accompanying medicine. Right now, the current collective medical thought suggests that natural medicine be used only to supplement accepted modern medical practices. In that case of minor ailments your expert we actually advise you to take natural therapies instead.

The practice of modern medicine revolves around diagnosing an illness and prescribing treatments for such. Natural medicine is helpful because it suggests that treatment be not necessarily given only when sick. Natural medicine strives to make each patient practice good health habits. These habits include good diet, healthy living, and the regular natural treatment.

It is this same line of thought that leads our parents to tell us to eat our vegetables. Yes, a healthy lifestyle and will do no harm to our well-being. And this is the foundation of natural medicine – may it be massage, herbal medicine, aromatherapy or others.

It is funny but true that science, in its quest for excellence, is studying the knowledge of sages past. This, surprisingly, leads us back to the remedies nature offers. The possibilities of finding remedies to everyday illnesses in natural medicine are encouraging. So staying tuned to studying these remedies is worthwhile until we can verify that these therapies are truly helpful to our health and our society.

The Medical Science Behind Dry Skin

Most people face dry skin problems in their lives. Those that do usually wonder whether it is something to worry about and should they see a doctor. Usually these questions are answered on an individual basis. There are several qualifications to consider in the medical science behind dry skin.

The medical name for dry skin is Xeroderm. This actually means dry skin. This condition affects your skin or your largest organ. The condition usually happen because your body has lost important natural oils and moisture from its cell wall. Therefore, causing your skin to have a dry feeling. Because the skin is composed of several layers, they reaction to this condition could differ depending on the extent of the condition.

The only necessary treatment for dry skin, for most patients, is to take better care of it and to use moisturizers and emollients on the skin. Your body will remain healthy with these things because they replenish the lost moisture and oils in the skin. There are prescription ointments and moisturizers for more serious conditions in which the skin is damaged from being too dry. Here is a crème you may like:

http://www.clickaudit.com/goto/?50572

Xeroderma occurs throughout the body but some areas are affected more often than others. For instance, you may find it in your lower legs, arms, thighs and your body’s side. The most common area is near the abdomen. Other areas include the hands, face and neck.

Usually if you are suffering from Xeroderm you will experience scaling which is actually the lost of the first layer of your outer skin. This is often a visible sign. Other experiences are itching and in extreme cases cracks will appear in the skin. This often occurs when you are experiencing dry skin on your feet.

Most people will at some point face the problem of dry skin. It should be taken care of because as you continue to scratch your skin can open and cause more damage.

Acomplia Pill: the Great Advancement in Medical Science

Author: Jack White

Medical science has traveled a long distance in technological advancement. Particularly, last three decades have witnessed great changes in the technology related with diagnosis and treatment of diseases. No branch of medical science whether neurology or gastroenterology is left untouched of this technological revolution. Neurology is the system of coordination and control of body. Many efforts have been made to find out the relationship between ailments of body with neurological imbalance of the body. The results are wonderful; now many incurable diseases can be cured by proper stimulation of neurological system of the body. Obesity is one among such major diseases.

Obesity is the result of excessive intake of food which later is accumulated in the body beneath the skin in the form of fat, giving the body a bulky look. Our neurological system has a control over our dietary habits. Before eating anything we get permission from our brain. The brain permits us only when it will have the signal of hunger sent to it by the cells of the body. A neuro-receptor named as endo-cannabinoid-1 (CB-1) sends the signals of hunger to the brain. This receptor is a part of our neurological system. This way a smooth coordination is established between our brain and digestive system. Whenever, there is some unbalancing in the functioning of the CB-1 receptor, a person can start eating excessive food.

Acomplia, the oral prescription diet pill can help in such a situation by inhibiting the functioning of CB-1 receptor. The active constituent of Acomplia is Rimonabant which have the tendency of blocking CB-1 receptor. Initially Rimonabant was clinically tested by Sanofi-Aventis as an anti-smoking drug because the same CB-1 receptor is also responsible for carrying the signal of urge for smoking to the brain. During this testing Acomplia (Rimonabant) is found very effective in curbing enormous urge for food. After rigorous clinical tests the drug manufacturer Sanofi-Aventis launched Acomplia in the UK anti-obesity drug market in the month of June. The popularity of drug among the people of the UK is a proof of its efficacy.

The launch of this drug is anticipated in many other countries; Germany, Denmark, Norway, Ireland and Finland are the prominent among those countries. FDA approval for Acomplia is in the line only after that the drug will be launched in the US anti-obesity drug market most probably by the name of Zimulti. Sanofi-Aventis is highly anticipative to get approval soon.

Acomplia may have some initial mild side-effects in some people like constipation, stomach disorder, nausea, dizziness, anxiety and headache. However these side effects are mild generally disappear with continuous use of the drug for few days. Pregnant ladies and breast feeding mothers must avoid using Acomplia.

Doctor's prescription and advice for starting the use of Acomplia is essential. Both prescription and advice for Acomplia are available through online pharmacies. They may or may not charge for their service; confirm this thing beforehand.

Stepping Lightly Over Boxes of Medical Experience

A multi-vehicle trauma! This is what it is all about, I thought, as I followed my senior resident to the stairs. While my age placed my training against a St. Elsewhere’s backdrop, my excitement was more consistent with the modern, high-energy ER soundtrack. The emergency room itself inspired excitement, and as a third year medical student I had not yet developed the healthy fear that affected more senior, and more answerable, members of our surgical team. As we approached the cubicle I noted that the patient was small, maybe two years old. Red froth bubbled from his mouth as the emergency room staff frantically removed his cervical collar. I heard the word ‘tracheotomy’, and someone said “hold him down!” as his arms reached into the air. I grabbed his hand and held tight, grateful that I had found a mission that I could handle.

To my surprise, the hand gripped back. And suddenly… time stopped. Small fingers wrapped around my finger, and at once I was sitting with a small boy, stillness around us. I looked beyond the red froth, to see his clear, blue eyes gazing forward. No longer aware of the work to be done, I began to understand a tragic story. Through pieces of conversation I realized that the boy’s mother and father lay dead on gurneys in cubicles behind me, victims of a drunken driver. In a flash I could see all of what our experience on earth offered: life and death, hope and despair, beauty and horror.

After 15 years, I still feel heaviness in my heart as I remember that night. I have not attempted to describe the scene before, but I have sometimes felt the moment’s essence, as a secret part of what has since become ‘me’.

I have many secrets. I remember the 5-year-old girl who I met in the oncology clinic, with newly diagnosed leukemia. I silently winced in pain at the smile on her small face, an innocent unaware of the needle-sticks ahead of her. She sat with her mother, whose expression betrayed the knowledge that her daughter would be forced from the world where she belonged; a child’s world of security and happiness. I remember the seven-year-old child who died of sepsis in our recovery room after hours of attempted resuscitation, and I remember the horror that filled the room as we accepted the futility of our efforts. And I wonder, how have these secret images affected me? Am I a better doctor, or parent, or friend, or do I now carry a seriousness that has driven some of my personality inside, and beyond reach? Will I be a better psychiatrist? Am I more tuned in to pain, or has my exposure given me a resigned, grim acceptance of suffering?

For much of my life, my approach to learning was that all learning was good learning. My goal was to face life’s experiences as a sponge, seeing as much as I could see, and experiencing as much of life as possible. My assumption was that humans had the capacity to keep the wheat and discard the chaff; to assimilate the positive and to disregard the negative aspects of experience. The end result would be a ‘complete’ personality, free of bias, unfettered by misconception, and nourished by the ultimate sustenance of personality, information.

At some point my early opinions about learning became tempered with caution. I began to see that in regards to learning, experience, and personality, at least in my own case, I am what I eat. As much as I wanted to believe that I was capable of learning only the desirable aspects of experience, I saw that my personality was affected in ways that I hadn’t predicted. I remember briefly facing these questions as a college student, when I wondered, in 1970’s fashion, if there was in fact any evidence that people were ‘smarter’ after formal education. I thought more about the topic during a period of my life when I actively meditated, as I became aware of the constant parade of thoughts that drifted through my consciousness, despite my best efforts to limit them. This view of personality as an unorganized collection of experience is more Eastern, more consistent with what I have read of the developing ego, and more consistent with my experience as a parent of teenagers. Some things, once learned, cannot be unlearned. Some bad experiences are unconsciously assimilated and eventually inhibit function, much like adware on a Windows 98 computer. Memories accumulate like boxes of artifacts in a darkened basement. In my own case, half-opened boxes litter the floor, and some emit frightening noises.

As I work toward becoming a psychiatrist, I would like to develop an understanding of the biases that shape my attitudes; biases that have the potential to interfere with neutral observation and reflection. It is easy to identify the obvious examples of personal experience that interfere with the neutrality that I desire. For example, I can easily recognize the barriers that stand in the way of my feeling compassion for the playground bully. And the death of one of my best college friends during the attacks of September 11 undoubtedly affects my opinions of America’s role in the world. But while in psychiatry we learn to identify personal and historical events that have shaped our attitudes, I wonder if work and training experiences are incorporated in potentially prejudicial ways as well, perhaps beyond question because of their endorsement by common medical experience. I would like to identify the ways that my experiences in medicine and psychiatry change my view of the world, in order to have foresight into bias that will develop in the future. Of course, unique character traits result from experience in all professions; as I sit in the auditorium prior to my daughter’s band concert, the principal, oblivious to the ages of the assembled parents, reminds us to remain quiet and respectful during the concert. But with admitted narcissism, I see the experiences faced by physicians as particularly memorable.

The experiences faced in psychiatry training, while less overtly dramatic than the world of CPR and tracheotomies, force one to incorporate a different type of emotional experience. In my short training, I have been moved by the isolation of schizophrenia, by the emptiness and despair of depression, and by the ravages of families wrought by addictions. It is often difficult to come to terms with reactions to psychiatric experience because of the lack of formal resolution. Psychiatric diseases for the most part are not cured, and yet are not fatal by themselves; so there is no exclamation point to treatment successes and failures, and less opportunity to place experience on the opposite side of the line that protects our present world view from the tragedies of the past. There is also a learned frustration that develops as we accept that the will of our patients does not always coincide with our desire to help. And again I wonder, what have I begun to ‘understand’ about mental illness? Can I make a difference? What is the meaning of life in the face of such suffering?

At these moments, I try to find gratitude for the opportunity to seek psychodynamic understanding. The beautiful, horrible experiences of life weave tapestries, unique to each of us and to each of our patients, with fibers visible only to those willing to see them. And in the tapestries lie the questions, and the answers to the questions, and the answers to all of the questions to come. To study the fabric of these tapestries is to study the essence, and the meaning, of life itself. It may be asking too much to weave our own tapestries by design, but one can be aware of the admonition of Aldous Huxley, that experience teaches only the teachable.

And once again, we are back to the original question. Is all learning beneficial, and are all experiences enriching? Is it true that what does not kill us makes us stronger? Perhaps the answer is moot, since no matter our preferences, experience finds us. Maybe I can make an occasional decision as to what to remember, or face life’s challenges and disappointments with the respect required to ease cynicism. Perhaps I can embrace the feelings and the meanings of life events, rather than attempt to diminish their awareness. Perhaps all I can ask for is to find experiences with my eyes open, and to place my boxes in a well-lit room, where I won’t trip over them.

The New Health Insurance - Avoid Diabetes and Heart Disease So your Medical Retirement Acct Grows

Author: Wiley Long

It is now estimated the average couple will need over $200,000 in retirement just to cover medical expenses. Health Savings Accounts are now giving people serious incentives to take care of their health so that money will be there when they need it in old age. Health Savings Accounts are tax-favored accounts where someone with a qualifying High Deductible Health insurance Plan (HDHP) can deposit money to be used for future medical expenses. The money can be withdrawn any time to pay medical expenses tax-free. Those who stay healthy and don't withdraw the money benefit from tax-deferred growth, just like with an IRA. Many experts now believe that 85-90% of all health problems are self-induced, and can be easily avoided if you understand how. By avoiding the most common diseases that affect modern Americans, you can delay having to take money out of your HSA, and take great advantage of the tax-deferred growth. Over a 20 year period, tax-deferred growth and tax-free use of your money to pay medical expenses during retirement could yield a 30% better return than a taxable investment. Metabolic Syndrome: The Preventable Diseases That Almost Everyone Gets One out of every five Americans, 45% of those in their 60's, and two-thirds of overweight people have metabolic syndrome. An astounding 70% of Americans have at least one symptom. The symptoms of metabolic syndrome include elevated fasting blood sugar, high LDL cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and a waist circumference of 34 inches or more. Three of the top five causes of death - diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease - are all related to metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome could also be thought of as "pre-diabetes". Of the cancers, prostate and breast cancer are particularly correlated with metabolic syndrome. And metabolic syndrome will soon overtake cigarette smoking as the number one risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Yet the diseases of metabolic syndrome are almost entirely preventable by simply eating a good diet, exercising, and maintaining a normal body weight. Do so, and you avoid paying for the medications that everyone else is taking. Even more importantly, you avoid the surgery, hospitalization, rehab, and all the other expenses that come with a heart attack, stroke, colon cancer, and other related health problems. If you are withdrawing several hundred dollars a year from your HSA to pay for cholesterol medication and blood pressure medication and other drugs, you're going to have a difficult time growing the account. But if you stay healthy, and invest most of your money in a good mutual fund, you could easily accumulate over $500,000 in a 25 year period. HSAs reward personal responsibility. Those who save for the future and maintain healthy lifestyle habits will be rewarded with both health and wealth in their old age.
